Investigating the impact of big data analytics on supply chain operations: case studies from the UK private sector
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityIn the era of increasing competitive pressure and pace of changing demand, volatility and disturbance have become the standard in today’s global markets. The spread of Covid-19 is a prime example of this. Supply chain (SC) managers are urged to rethink their competitive strategies and to identify ways to offer personalised products and services through making use of advanced technologies. With many SC executives recognising the role of data exploitation in improving performance, big data analytics (BDA) has become a salient factor for all kinds of organisations to increase efficiency and gain competitive advantage. Extant research in supply chain management (SCM) has provided limited understanding of strategic SC decision-making concerning BDA. Moreover, inquiry in this area is still poor in relation to providing a conceptual framework that illustrates the potential benefits of BDA utilisation in the SCO context. This study aims to investigate the real impact of BDA implementation in this context. A theoretical framework is developed to explain the motives behind adopting BDA in SCO along with the potential benefits of implementing BDA in SCO. Multiple case studies are the strategy utilised to collect qualitative data in order to gain detailed and in-depth understanding of the BDA as a new phenomenon in the context of SCOs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in a cross-sectional time horizon across four different industries. Institutional theory and Task-Technology fit theories are utilised to provide better understanding regarding how and why firms adopt BDA as a novel technology, along with the drivers and opportunities of this technology utilisation. The empirical findings reveal that BDA is still in its infant stage, but it is a growing area which has recently been given more attention by scholars and managers. There is a disconnect between the hype and knowledge discussed in the literature and the real practice of BDA. That is, the current state of BDA use is relatively fragmented and rhetoric in discussion among practitioners and researchers. The main contribution of this study is breaking-down the process of BDA utilisation in order to evaluate its implementation in the SCO context by drawing upon a wide range of existing literature regarding BDA and SCO, in addition to present conceptual framework explaining the potential impact of BDA implementation through presenting BDA utilisation drivers, BDA capabilities, and its role in solving different issues
Design and implementation of log domain decoder
Low-Density-Parity-Check (LDPC) code has become famous in communications systems for error correction, as an advantage of the robust performance in correcting errors and the ability to meet all the requirements of the 5G system. However, the mot challenge faced researchers is the hardware implementation, because of higher complexity and long run-time. In this paper, an efficient and optimum design for log domain decoder has been implemented using Xilinx system generator with FPGA device Kintex 7 (XC7K325T-2FFG900C). Results confirm that the proposed decoder gives a Bit Error Rate (BER) very closed to theory calculations which illustrate that this decoder is suitable for next generation demand which needs high data rate with very low BER
The Impact of Social Media on the Performance of Microfinance Institutions in Developing Countries:A Quantitative Approach
PurposeOver the last few decades, microfinance industry is argued to have played a constructive role in alleviating poverty level and providing the underprivileged with access to financial services. Statistics from the World Bank reveal that, currently, only 4% of the underprivileged have been served out of the 3 billion+ potential clients. Such results are due to several claims, particularly the operational and financial challenges faced by microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the constant flux inviting more attentions towards its performance. While explicit attention is given by many researchers towards mobile banking and information and communication technology (ICT) in improving the MFIs’ performance, the study on how social media, as a rapidly growing online phenomenon, can impact on the MFIs’ performance remains scarce. As such, this study aims to investigate this impact based on four dimensional performance indicators: efficiency, financial sustainability, portfolio quality and outreach.Design/methodology/approachA model is proposed and tested to ascertain the relationship between social media applications and organisational performance. In so doing, web-based questionnaires have been used to collect data from MFI employees in developing countries. Results reveal a significant influence of the social media over the MFIs’ performance, offering valuable insights into both researchers and practitioners in the domain of microfinance, as well as social media—conforming that the adoption of social media as marketing, advertising and communication tools may significantly improve the MFIs’ performance.FindingsThe results demonstrate that there is a positive and significant impact of social media use within microfinance on the key indicators of MFIs. They also show that the highest impact of social media usage within the microfinance is on the portfolio quality. In addition, it was found that marketing and advertising; communication and sales and distribution are the main areas where social media is able to support while social networking websites are the most popular platforms employed in MFIs.Originality/valueThis study adds to the existing literature few theoretical and practical aspects. First, this study developed a model for assessing the value of social media as a new phenomenon within this type of organisation. Second, it offers microfinance sponsors, managers and policy makers with a frame of reference to understand what social media platform can be deployed for each purpose. Third, with the identification of the main MFIs’ performance indicators, this research provided a reference of performance measurement guide for microfinance industry when assessing different technological employment
Critical analysis of the impact of big data analytics on supply chain operations
Undoubtedly, due to the increasingly competitive pressures and the stride of varying demands, volatility and disturbance have become the standard in today’s global markets. The spread of Covid-19 is a prime example of that. Supply chain managers are urged to rethink their competitive strategies to make use of Big Data Analytics (BDA), due to the increasing uncertainty in both demand and supply side, the competition among the supply chain partners and the need to identify ways to offer personalised products and services. With many supply chain executives recognising the need of ‘improving with data’, supply chain businesses need to equip themselves with sophisticated BDA methods/techniques to create valuable insights from big data, thus, enhancing the decision-making process and optimising the efficiency of Supply Chain Operations (SCO). This paper proposes the building blocks of a theoretical framework for understanding the impact of BDA on SCO. The framework is based on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on BDA and SCO, underpinned by Task-Technology-Fit theory and Institutional Theory. The paper contributes to the literature by building a platform for future work on investigating factors driving and inhibiting BDA impact on SCO
Wireless Sensor Network Optimization Using Genetic Algorithm
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a high potential technology used in many fields (agriculture, earth, environmental monitoring, resources union, health, security, military, and transport, IoT technology). The band width of each cluster head is specific, thus, the number of sensors connected to each cluster head is restricted to a maximum limit and exceeding it will weaken the connection service between each sensor and its corresponding cluster head. This will achieve the research objective which refers to reaching the state where the proposed system energy is stable and not consuming further more cost. The main challenge is how to distribute the cluster heads regularly on a specified area, that’s why a solution was supposed in this research implies finding the best distribution of the cluster heads using a genetic algorithm. Where using an optimization algorithm, keeping in mind the cluster heads positions restrictions, is an important scientific contribution in the research field of interest. The novel idea in this paper is the crossover of two-dimensional integer encoded individuals that replacing an opposite region in the parents to produce the children of new generation. The mutation occurs with probability of 0.001, it changes the type of 0.05 sensors found in handled individual. After producing more than 1000 generations, the achieved results showed lower value of fitness function with stable behavior. This indicates the correct path of computations and the accuracy of the obtained results. The genetic algorithm operated well and directed the process towards improving the genes to be the best possible at the last generation. The behavior of the objective function started to be regular gradually throughout the produced generations until reaching the best product in the last generation where it is shown that all the sensors are connected to the nearest cluster head. As a conclusion, the genetic algorithm developed the sensors’ distribution in the WSN model, which confirms the validity of applying of genetic algorithms and the accuracy of the results
